How controls work

Every game action has a fixed control index. IsControlJustPressed(0, 51) asks "did the player just press whatever key is bound to INPUT_CONTEXT", which is E on keyboard and DPAD RIGHT on a pad by default. The keys in the table are the defaults. If a player rebinds a GTA action in the settings, the index keeps working and follows their key.

Many indexes share a key. E is INPUT_CONTEXT, INPUT_PICKUP, INPUT_TALK, INPUT_VEH_HORN and more, and which one fires depends on what the player is doing (on foot, in a vehicle, in a menu). Use the key finder above to see every control on a key before you pick one for your script.

The first argument: input group

ValueNameUse it for
0PLAYER_CONTROLAlmost everything. On foot, driving, weapons.
1CAMERA_CONTROLCamera inputs. You rarely need it.
2FRONTEND_CONTROLMenus and the pause screen. Keeps working when 0 is blocked by a frontend menu.

The FiveM docs only list 0 and 2. 1 exists in the game's enum but is not documented there. If a check does nothing inside a NUI or pause menu, try 2.

Control indexes vs RegisterKeyMapping

  • Control indexes are the game's own actions. Good for reacting to vanilla input (block attacking in a safe zone, detect when someone presses E near a door). They need a Wait(0) loop and you cannot give your feature a key of its own.
  • RegisterKeyMapping adds your command to Settings, Key Bindings, FiveM. Each player can change the key, the choice is saved on their machine, and the command fires on key down (+cmd) and key up (-cmd) with no loop. Use it for menus, radios, emotes and anything else your resource adds.

The default key of a mapping only applies the first time a player sees it. Changing it later in your script does not move existing players, so pick it carefully.

Disabling controls

DisableControlAction only lasts one frame, so call it every tick. While a control is disabled the normal IsControlJustPressed returns false. Read it with IsDisabledControlJustPressed orIsDisabledControlPressed instead. DisableAllControlActions(0) blocks the whole group, then re-enable what you need with EnableControlAction.

Data

Data: FiveM docs (game references, controls), 361 controls from index 0 to 360. Keyboard keys are the QWERTY defaults and gamepad buttons use Xbox names, as listed there. Key mapper names in the RegisterKeyMapping snippet come from the FiveMinput mapper parameter ids.
